{"id":3387,"date":"2018-12-27T13:01:20","date_gmt":"2018-12-27T18:01:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.deanriffs.com\/?p=3387"},"modified":"2021-07-20T09:39:21","modified_gmt":"2021-07-20T13:39:21","slug":"stille-nacht-hellige-nacht","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.deanriffs.com\/index.php\/2018\/12\/27\/stille-nacht-hellige-nacht\/","title":{"rendered":"Stille Nacht, Hellige Nacht"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><base target=\"\u201d_blank\u201d\"><\/p>\n<p>Christmas Eve 2018 marked the 200th anniversary of the world&#8217;s most beloved Christmas carol, <em>Silent Night<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coincidentally, this coming Sunday marks the 164th anniversary of the song&#8217;s composer unsuccessful attempt at confirming authorship of <em>Silent Night&#8217;s<\/em> melody.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Over the years there have been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icce.rug.nl\/~soundscapes\/VOLUME02\/Silent_Night_History.shtml\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>lots of stories<\/strong><\/span><\/a> about the song&#8217;s debut, ranging from a church organ in disrepair requiring a musical arrangement for a guitar, to the song being sung only once by its two creators and then discarded.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3390\" src=\"http:\/\/www.deanriffs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Gruber-Mohr-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"399\" height=\"200\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Like the song itself, the beauty of the true story of <em>Silent Night, <\/em>or&nbsp;<em>Stille Nacht, Hellige Nacht <\/em>in the original German, is the simplicity of the song&#8217;s heritage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>BACK STORY <\/strong>A young German priest named Joseph Mohr wrote the poem in 1816 that later became the lyrics to the song.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">On Christmas Eve day in 1818 Mohr presented his poem to his musician friend Franz Gruber and asked if he could create a melody and guitar accompaniment that could be sung at Midnight Mass in Obendorf, Austria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!-- \/wp:post-content --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That night Gruber and Mohr, accompanied by the St. Nicholas Church choir, sang the song for the first time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3403\" style=\"width: 375px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3403\" src=\"http:\/\/www.deanriffs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Silent-Night-Chapel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"272\"><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St. Nicholas Chapel &#8211; Obendorf, Austria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The original composition contained six stanzas compared to the three in the contemporary version and the original lyrics also were slightly different than what is usually sung today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">How did a <a href=\"http:\/\/inmozartsfootsteps.com\/851\/the-story-of-silent-night-the-origin-of-the-hymn\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">hastily arranged composition<\/span><\/strong><\/a> intended for a single Christmas Eve service come to be translated into hundreds of languages and become the world&#8217;s best known Christmas carol?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You might say it was a Christmas miracle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>THE DISPERSION OF SILENT NIGHT <\/strong>An Austrian organ builder and repairman named Karl Mauracher traveled frequently to Obendorf over the years to repair the organ at St. Nicholas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One visit after the debut of<em> Silent Night<\/em> Mauracher obtained a copy of the composition and shared it with the <em>Strassers<\/em> and the <em>Rainer Family<\/em>, two families of traveling folk singers based in his home area of the Ziller Valley. (Think the Von Trapp family immortalized in <em>The Sound of Music<\/em> but a century earlier.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3408\" src=\"http:\/\/www.deanriffs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Early-Silent-Night-Copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"368\"><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <i>Strassers<\/i> reportedly changed some of Franz Gruber&#8217;s original notes into the version we know today at a concert in Leipzig, Austria in 1832.&nbsp; Around that same time the <em>Rainer Family<\/em> sang the carol before an audience which included Emperor Franz I (Leader of the Austro-Hungarian Empire) and Tsar Alexander I (Russian emperor from 1801-1825).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The beloved Christmas carol was first sung in America by the <em>Rainer Family <\/em>outside Trinity Church in New York City in 1839.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A decade later the song was famous throughout Europe but its origins were not.&nbsp; Father Joseph Mohr died penniless in 1848 after donating his meager earnings as a priest to child education and elder care in Wagrain, Austria.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Silent night, Holy night, <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>All is calm, All is bright&#8230;&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>THE MYSTERY OF SILENT NIGHT <\/strong>During his lifetime Franz Gruber produced numerous orchestral arrangements of the classic, but when public speculation arose as to the popular song&#8217;s composer (Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven were the most popular guesses), Franz Gruber wrote to authorities in Berlin on December 30, 1854 asserting he was the real composer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Gruber went to his grave in 1863 unacknowledged as the melody&#8217;s creator. It wasn&#8217;t until 1994, when an early Joseph Mohr arrangement of the song with the words, &#8220;Melodie von Fr. Xav.
